Green Port Concept The Mauritius Ports Authority (MPA) recognizes the need to conduct port activities in a sustainable and climate friendly manner. Inthisneweraofclimatechangetheadoptionofalow-carbonandenvironmentfriendlydevelopmentstrategyhasbecomeaninevitabletrendandnecessityforfutureports. InthiscontexttheMPAhasembarkedintheimplementationoftheGreenPortConceptwiththeobjectivetoreducethenegativeimpactsofportactivitiesontheenvironment. AhighlevelGreenPortCommitteehasbeensetuptospearheadtheGreenPortInitiative. IntheprocessofpracticalimplementationoftheGreenPortConcepttheMPAhasimplementedtheISO14001EnvironmentalManagementSystemthathasidentifiedthesignificantenvironmentalaspects,definedtheenergyandenvironmentaltargetstobemet,monitorperformanceandensuresthatbestenvironmentalmanagementpracticesareinplace. Furthermore,TheMPAhasinitiatedvisibleactionstowardswastemanagementandresourceconservationsuchasbyrecyclingallitsE-wasteincludingbatteries,usedoil, compostingitsgreenwaste,promotingsustainableuseofpaperandsettinguparainwaterharvestingsystem. Airandwaterqualityandbiodiversityconservationintheportarealsomajoraspectsthatarebeingmonitored. PortstakeholdershavealsojoinedhandswiththeMPAinaspiritofcollaborationfortheGreenPortInitiativeandhaveconcretelyshowntheircommitmentforabetterandmoresustainableportenvironmentthroughthesigningofaPortEnvironmentCharter. TheoverallrationaleofthisprojectislinkedtotheveryhighdependenceofMauritiusonimportedfossilfuels,coupledwiththehighvolatilityandincreasingcostoffuelprices,makingenergysecurityofstrategicimportancefortheisland.Italsobuildsonthedrivetodobusinessinacarbon-constrainedworld,primarilyduetotheimpactsofclimatechangeandclimatevariability,whichhasledMauritiustoembarkoninitiativesthatseektoputthecountryonasustainabledevelopmentpath.
