ThePortofSingaporeincludesterminalslocatedwithinTanjongPagar,Brani,PasirPanjang,Keppel,andSembawang. PortofSingapore–Historicaloverview ThebeginningsoftradeontheSingaporeRiverdatebacktothe13thcenturywhenthefirstportsettlementwasfounded.However,itdidnotstandthetestoftime,andSingaporeremainedwithoutaportuntiltheeraofBritishcolonialisminthe19thcenturywhenEastIndiaCompanyin1820foundedtheSingaporeHarborBoard.Favorablegeographicallocationandfavorablecustomspolicyensuredtheeconomicboomoftheport.AfterJapan’sattackonSingaporein1942,theseaportfacedthevisionofcompletelyrebuildingitsinfrastructure.Thankstotheimplementedmeasures,thevolumeofcommercialshippingbegantoincreaserapidly,from20.4millionNRTin1947to82.9millionNRTin1963.In1964,theSingaporeHarborBoardwaschangedtothePortofSingaporeAuthority(PSA). Inthe1960sand’70s,therewererapidchangesdrivenbyindustrialization,sealedwiththecreationoftheJurongportin1965,forthetransportofbulkcargo.In1971,PSAtookoverandtransformedtheformerBritishNavybaseintotheSembawangembankment,andalsoinvestedintheconstructionofthefirstterminalinSoutheastAsia.SoonPasirPanjangquaybeganoperations,andin1972TheTanjongPagarContainerTerminalwasestablishedalongwiththreecontainerberths.Inthesameyear,onJune24,thefirstcontainershiparrivedattheport–M.V.Nihon. Theexpansionoftheportwascontinuedinthe1990s.ItincludedtheadditionofmooringsatthenewBraniterminal,reconstructionoffacilitiesattheTanjongPagarterminal,andanincreaseincapacityattheJurongPorttohandlethegrowingvolumeofbulkcargo. In1996,thefunctionsofthePSAportweretakenoverbytheMaritimeandPortAuthorityofSingapore,whilePSAbecameacorporationin1997andbegantofunctionasPSACorporationLimited.Thecompanycurrentlymanagestheport,exceptforJurong. PSATerminal Therearefourcontainer terminalsintheportarea,ofwhichPSA(PortSingaporeAuthority)Terminal with54berthsforshipsisthemostsignificant.Itemploys33.000employees andmoves220.000containersaday.Thereisalsoadedicatedcarterminal servingapproximatelyonemillionvehiclesayear. In2018,ittransportedloadswithatotalcapacityof81millionTEU.OnJune18,2019,itwoninthecategory“BestContainerTerminal–Asia,”becomingthethirtiethwinneroftheAsianFreight,Logistics&SupplyChainAwards(AFLAS). JurongPort Itisamulti-taskoperatorhandlingbulk,general,andcontainerloads.Itofficiallystartedoperationsin1965,andin2001openeditscontainerterminal.Asaresult,becomingafull-fledgedport.JurongPortreceivesapproximately40,000shipconnectionsperyearandalsoservesmanyjoint-ventureterminalsinChinaandIndonesia. JurongPortcanbedividedinto: generalcargoterminal–usedforsteelmachinesandproductsbulkcargoterminal–handlingloadssuchasbulkcementandfurnaceslagcontainerterminal–with500,000TEUhandlingcapacityanddirectconnectionstoportsin45countries. Investmentsandinfrastructuredevelopment In2015,PSATerminalcompletedthethirdandfourthstageofexpansionofthecontainerterminal,basedonthecreationofaninnovativeinfrastructurethankstowhichtheseabottomwasdeepenedto18meters.Thisprovidedtheabilitytosupportcontainershipswithacarryingcapacityofover17,000TEU. Theporthasbeenimprovedwithinnovativeinfrastructure,includinganecologicalsetofportcranes.
