Definitionofalcoholaddiction Alcoholaddictionreferstoaperson'sinabilitytocontrolalcoholconsumption,whichcausesdamagestocognitiveability,behavioralmanifestations,physicalhealth,socialfunction,andinterpersonalrelationship,whilestillrepeatingalcoholconsumptioncontinuously. Alcoholaddictionisdividedintotwocategories: Alcoholabuse:Referstocontinuousdrinkingthataffectstheoriginallife,orcausesphysicalharm,butcontinuestodrink. Alcoholdependence:Referstothephysicalorpsychologicaldependenceonalcohol.Youneedtodrinktofeelcomfortable.Ifyoustopdrinkingsuddenly,youwillhavewithdrawalsymptoms. Causesofalcoholaddiction Heredity:Studieshaveshownthatoneoftheidenticaltwinshasanalcoholaddict,whiletheothertwinshavetwicetheriskofsufferingfromalcoholaddiction.TheAsiansaremorepronetolackofacetaldehydedehydrogenase(ALDH-1)intheliver,whichresultsinslowermetabolismofalcoholandpronetobecomedrunken. Psychology:Thepersonalityperformanceofalcoholicsispronetoemotionaldepression,lowfrustrationtolerance,easyanxietyordependenceandothercharacteristics. Environment:Unstabletowork,highpressureinlife,andoftenneedtodrinkforentertainmentorjuvenilesinalcoholaddictionfamilies.Theyaremorelikelytodevelopalcoholaddictionasadultsthanchildreninnon-alcoholaddictionfamilies. Characteristicsofalcoholaddiction Alcoholtolerance Ittakesmorealcoholtoachievethesameeffectaspreviousdrinking,whichisanindicatorofalcoholdependence.However,inthelatestageofalcoholaddiction,duetothedeteriorationofliverfunction,thetoleranceofalcoholaddictionwillbereduced.Onthecontrary,aslongasyoudrinkalcohol,youmayexperiencesymptomsofalcoholism. Alcoholwithdrawalsyndrome Afterlong-termheavydrinking,thebodywillhaveextremelyuncomfortablereactionswhenstoppingdrinking,including:nightsweats,handtremors,insomnia,vomiting,emotionalinstability,temporaryhallucinations,andseverecasesmayevencauseepilepsyordeath. Thedangersofalcoholaddiction Irreversiblebraindamages:includingmemoryloss,temperamentchanges,andacceleratedbrainfunctiondegeneration. Influencesofcognitivefunction:changeinjudgment,memory,learningability,etc.,affectlife,workorstudy. Hepatobiliarygastrointestinalrelateddiseases:alcoholichepatitis,livercirrhosis,fattyliver,digestiveulcer,pancreatitis,etc. Sleepdisorders:earlyawakening,restlesssleep,awakeninginthemiddleofthenight,sleepdisorder,etc. Increasetheriskofmentalillness:suchasdepression,bipolardisorder,orsuiciderisk. Treatmentforalcoholaddiction Alcoholaddictionisbynomeansasinglecauseanditstreatmentalsorequireslong-termcooperationfrommultipleaspects(medication,psychologicalcounseling,etc.)toachievethegoalofreducingdrinkingorstoppingalcohol. AlcoholicsAnonymous(AA,AlcoholicsAnonymous):Thisisaglobalofnon-governmentalmutualaidorganization,anonymousandfreeofcharge.Throughmutualaidgroupsandbeliefs,itpromotesandmaintainsthemotivationofindividualstoabstainfromalcohol. Abstinencerules Herearesomeoftherulesforabstinencewe'vecomeupwithforyoutotry: Changeyourmindset:Behonestwithyourselfandadmitthatyouneedhelp. Makeadecision:Makeupyourmindtoquitdrinkingandstarttakingaction. Exploreandacceptyourself:Trulyexploreyourinnerthoughts,emotions,andbehaviors. Problemsolving:Howtodealwiththecurrentproblem?Thinkaboutit.Identifytheproblemandcomeupwithasolution.Lookforresources,anddon'tfightalone. Howtoallayworries:Besidesdrinking,youcanalsothinkaboutwhatelseyoucandotoeasethem Howtoturndownadrink:Bebraveenoughtosay"no"wheninvitedforadrink.
