Themethodofwhichistoseparatehydrogen-richgasfromthedieselfueltogenerateelectricityseparatelyinanauxiliarypowerunit.[1] Withthisprocess,aneffectivereductioninemissionscanbeachievedbyloweringtheconsumedvolumeofgasperhour.However,upon powerdemandsreaching60%asharpdecreaseinperformanceoccurs,whichcanbesolvedbyusingadieselorkerosinefuelwithamaximumCOconcentrationof1.5%.[1] Thereareavarietyofotherimplementationsofauxiliarypowerunitsinenergysystems.Thisexplainsforhowasignificantportionofemissionscomefromcommercialvehicles. Dieselenginesoperatingwithindenselypopulatedareas,runningwithinanineffectiverangeinordertopowertheirauxiliarysystems,suchasrefrigeration,arecontributorstoalargeportionoftheemissionsfromautomobiles.[2] Usingamodelwithadieselpoweredfour-strokeengineonatruckwith100%loadcapacitydrivingacombinationoftypicalurbanandcityroadcycles,emissionsandauxiliarypowerdemandwererecorded.Thenbyusingthecalculatedauxiliarypowerdemand,asourcewasdevelopedtosupportthedemandfortheauxiliarysystemsintheformofaPEMfuelcell. TheendproductofthePEMfuelcellwasabletosupporttheauxiliarysystemsofthetruckusingamaximumof5 kWofpower.Thisinputwasabletosustainthecoolingchamber,cabinair-conditioning,radiounit,etc.[2]Theintroductionofthisfuelcellalsocontributedtoa9%reductionindieselfuelconsumptionand9.6%reductioninCO2emissions.[2] LegalRequirementsforIndustries[edit] TheUnitedStatesEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyhassetoutrulesandguidelinesforhowauxiliaryandsupplementalpowersources(ASPS)thatprovidesecondarypowertowastewatertreatmentplantsincaseofablackout. ASPSshouldbeabletosupplyenoughpowertoruntheplanteffectively,andbeavailableforstart-upinashortperiodoftimeincaseofemergency.[3]TypesofASPSnecessaryforadequatepowergenerationinclude:internalcombustionengines,microturbines,solarcells,fuelcells,andwindturbines. ASPStechnologyisrequiredtobereliableenoughtostartupquickly,andrunforextendedperiodsoftime,(i.e.48hoursormore)withsufficientfuel.[3] Efficiency[edit] Aspreviouslyaffirmed,auxiliarypowerunitsarecommonlyusedtoimprovetheefficiencyofelectricalsystem.Theuseofauxiliarypowerunitsforrangeextendedelectricautomobileshasbeenshowntoimprovethecontrolofenergyflowanddistributionthroughoutthesystem,improvingitsoverallefficiency.[4] Forclosedsystemswithextremepowerconsumptionsuchastankersandothervesselsatsea,theuseandqualityofauxiliarypowersystemshaveagreatimpactontheefficiencyoftheoverallsystem.
