C57BL/6JandC57BL/6Nvaryintheirfearresponses(Radulovicetal.1998;Stiedletal.1999)andhowanestheticsaffecttheircardiacfunctions(Rothetal.2002). C57BL/6NmiceandembryonicstemcellsderivedfromthemharbortheRd8mutationoftheCrb1gene,whichcausesdevelopmentaldefectsinphotoreceptorsegments(Mehalowetal.2003;Mattapalliletal.2012). MiceproducedbytheKnockoutMouseProject(KOMP)areonaB6Nbackground,whichmeansthatifyoubreedthemtoyourB6colony,youmaybeproducingoffspringwithamixedB6J;B6Ngeneticbackground. Whenyoureceivestrainsfromothersources,keepingthemutationonsimilarstrainbackgroundreducesthechancethatyouwillalterorloseyourstrain’sphenotypeduetobackgroundmodifiergenes. Onceyouknowthebackgroundofyourmousestrain,youcanbetteridentifytherightcontrolstrain,whichbackgroundtoselectforbackcrossing,andwhatstrain-specificphenotypesyoushouldbeawareof.
