Theproductisatypeofthin,elasticcottontapethatcanstretchupto140%ofitsoriginallength.[13]Asaresult,ifthetapeisappliedstretchedgreaterthanitsnormallength,itwill"recoil"afterbeingappliedandthereforecreateapullingforceontheskin.Thiselasticpropertyallowsmuchgreaterrangeofmotioncomparedtotraditionalwhiteathletictapeandcanalsobeleftonforlongperiodsbeforereapplication.[14] Designedtomimichumanskin,withroughlythesamethicknessandelasticproperties,thetapecanbestretched30–40%longitudinally.[13]Itisalatex-freematerialwithacrylicadhesive,whichisheatactivated.Thecottonfibersallowforevaporationandquickerdryingleadingtolongerweartime,upto4days.[15]Howthetapeisclaimedtoaffectthebodyisdependentonthelocationandhowitisapplied;thestretchdirection,theshape,andthelocationallsupposedlyplayaroleinthetape'shypotheticalfunction.[15] falseclaims,dubiousproducts,superstitions,andmagicalcharms."Novellaconcludedthat"Consumersshouldbeveryskepticalofclaimsmadeforproductsmarketedasathleticperformanceenhancing."[6] InAugust2012,sciencejournalistBrianDunningreportsin"KinesioTape:TheEvidence"thatpositivestudiesofthetapearetheresultofpeoplebeingdeceivedbya"stagemagician'strick"–whichhedescribesindetail–thatisusedtofoolsubjectsintothinkingstrengthorflexibilityisbeingaffected,whentheyarenot.Hereportsthatkinesiotapeisclaimedtobegoodforaplethoraofissuesincluding"painmanagement,injurytreatment,injuryprevention,enhancedperformance,increasedrangeofmotion,andjustaboutanythingelseanathletemightwant."Heconcludes:"Itsoundslikeamiracle—onesimpleproductthatdoeseverythingyoucanimagine.Inshort,atextbooksnakeoilproduct."[12] A2012journalarticlefromtheJournalofHandTherapyreportedonadoubleblindstudy,whereelastictherapeutictapemaybeofsomeassistancetocliniciansinimprovingpain-freeactiverangeofmotionimmediatelyaftertapeapplicationforpatientswithshoulderpain.Utilizationofthetapefordecreasingpainintensityordisabilityforyoungpatientswithsuspectedshouldertendonitis/impingementisnotsupported.Afterthisshortperiodtherewasnodifferenceinimprovementversususingshamtape.[13]Basedontwodifferentstudies,kinesiotapeshowedquickerdrainagethanmanuallyandbetterpatientcompliance.[18][unreliablemedicalsource?] A2013journalarticleexaminedtheuseofKinesioTapeandStretchingonshoulderjointrangeofmotion(ROM).Participantswithnohistoryofshoulderinjurieswereassignedtothreetreatmentgroups.OneusingKinesioTapeonly,onestretchingonly,andoneusingbothKinesioTapeandstretching.ItwasfoundthattheusageofKinesioTapecanincreaseshoulderROM,andthatstretchinghadnoeffectonshoulderROMifbeingusedaloneorwhencoupledwiththeKinesioTape.[19] A2014metaanalysislookedatmethodologicalqualityofstudies,alongwithoverallpopulationeffect,andsuggestedthatstudiesoflowermethodologicalqualityaremorelikelytoreportbeneficialeffectsofelastictherapeutictaping,thusindicatingtheperceivedeffectofusingkinesiotapingisnotreal.Italsosuggestedthatapplyingelastictherapeutictape,"tofacilitatemuscularcontractionhasno,oronlynegligible,effectsonmusclestrength".[20] A2015metaanalysisfoundthatthetapingprovidedmorepainreliefthannotreatmentatall,butwasnotbetterthanothertreatmentapproachesinpatientswithchronicmusculoskeletalpain.[5]Thesamemetaanalysisdidnotfindanysignificantchangesindisabilityasaresultoftaping.[5] A2016journalarticleintheJournalofExerciseTherapyandRehabilitationconductedastudytotestifthecolorsofKinesioTapehadanyeffectonpatientperceptioninpatientswithtighttrapeziusmuscles.Thestudyhadfiftyfemalesubjectswithtighttrapeziusmuscle.Fivedifferentcoloredtapeswereused,red,blue,black,white,andbeige.Itwasfoundthatthecolorofthetapemightaffectthefeelingsoftheparticipants,butnodifferencetothetrapeziusmusclewasnoted.[21] InJune2016,anarticlepublishedbyThePhysicianandSportsmedicinefoundthattreatmentforPesanserinusbursitisusingKinesioTapesignificantlydecreasedpainandswellingwhencomparedtoNaproxen(anantiinflammatorymedicine)+PhysicalTherapy.BothformsoftreatmentwereeffectivebuttheKinesioTapingwasfarmoreeffectiveonreductionofpain,basedonavisualanalogscale(VAS)andswellingbasedontheswellingscores.Swellingscorewasdeterminedbytheuseofsofttissuesonography.[22] InMarch2018,Science-BasedMedicineagainexaminedKTinresponsetoitspublicuseatthe2018WinterOlympicsinthearticleAMiscellanyofMedicalMalarkeyEpisode3:TheRevengening.Thearticlereportsthat:
