Andyetevenbeforetheapplaunched,usershadtakenthe6-secondconstraintasacreativechallenge.Somethingaboutthatloop—thewayaVineendlesslyrewounditselfaftercompleting,likeaGIFwithaudio—encouragedpeopletoputtheapptostrangeuses.“Itwassurprising,”saidDomHofmann,whofoundedVinewithRusYusupovandColinKrollfourmonthsbeforeTwitterboughtit.“Ouroriginalbetahadsomethinglike10or15peopleonit,andevenwiththatsmallgroupwestartedtoseeexperimentationprettyearlyon.” Withinweeks,itappearedthatVineprobablywouldneverbecometheeverydayvideosharingtoolitsfoundershadenvisioned.Insteaditbecamesomethingwilder—andmuchmoreculturallyinteresting.“Itbecameprettyclearassoonafterwelaunched,”Hofmannsaid.“Watchingthecommunityandthetoolpushoneachotherwasexcitingandunreal,andalmostimmediatelyitbecameclearthatVine’sculturewasgoingtoshifttowardscreativityandexperimentation.” “ItimmediatelybecameclearthatVine’sculturewasgoingtoshifttowardscreativity.”OnThursday,theexperimentationcametoanend.Withitsownfutureincreasinglyuncertain,TwittersaiditwouldshutdownVine’smobileappsometimeinthenextfewmonths.AndwhileexistingVineswillremainontheweb,amediaformatthathadbecomebelovedforitsversatilitynowappearsheadedthewayofBetamax. IanPadghamsawthepotentialinVine—bothcreativeandmonetary—beforealmostanyone.AsamemberofTwitter’smarketingteamin2012,hewasresponsibleformakingvideosthatexplainedhowtheserviceworked.(HisearlyfilmaboutworkingatTwitterislikelyoneofthemost-watchedrecruitingvideosevermade.)AfterTwitterboughtVine,hesatinonmeetingswiththemarketingteamandbegantoexploreitspotentialasacreativetool. In2013,Vinebeganallowinguserstorecordclipswiththeirphones’front-facingcameras,andusageexploded.Anecosystemofyoungstarssprunguparoundtheservice,whichevolvedintoakindoflive-actioncartoonnetwork.TherewasZachKing,whoseeye-poppingmagictricksearnedhim4millionfollowersandmorethan1.4billionviews.OrAmandaCerny,whosephysicalcomedyearnedmorethan2.2billionviews.LoganPaul,whoseVinesloopedmorethan4billiontimes,parlayedhisfollowingintoaseriesofactingroles—whileearning$200,000tocreateasingleVineforabrand,accordingtoarecent60Minutesreport. Ina2014lookathowvideoplatformswerecreatingthenextgenerationofcelebrities,TheNewYorkerputVineatthecenter.“AVine’sblink-quicktransience,combinedwithitsendlesslooping,simultaneouslysqueezestimeandstretchesit,”TadFriendwrote.Theappgeneratedcountlessmemes,andgrewincreasinglyself-referentialovertime,sothatasingle6-secondclipmightreferenceadozenprevioushitVines.Andyetinretrospectitseemsclearthat2014waswhenVinepeaked.Researchfirm7ParkDatasays3.64percentofallAndroidusersopenedVineinAugust2014;todaythatnumberhasfallento0.66percent.(TwitterneversaidhowmanypeopleusedVine,butonceclaimedithadanaudienceof200millionpeopleontheweb.)
