Dx.Sequencing ThepropersequencingforHIVdependsonthereasonfortheadmissionorencounter.WhenapatientisadmittedforanHIV-relatedcondition,sequenceB20 Humanimmunodeficiencyvirus[HIV]diseasefirst,followedbyadditionaldiagnosiscodesforallreportedHIV-relatedconditions.ConditionsalwaysconsideredHIV-relatedincludeKaposi’ssarcoma,lymphoma,Pneumocystiscariniipneumonia(PCP),cryptococcalmeningitis,andcytomegaloviraldisease.Theseconditionsareconsideredopportunisticinfections. IfapatientwithHIVdiseaseisadmittedforanunrelatedcondition(e.g.,fracture),sequencethecodefortheunrelatedcondition,first.ReportB20asanadditionaldiagnosis,alongwith anyHIV-relatedconditions. ApplyZ21Asymptomatichumanimmunodeficiencyvirus[HIV]infectionstatuswhenthepatientisHIVpositiveanddoesnothaveanydocumentedsymptomsofanHIV-relatedillness.DonotusethiscodeifthetermAIDSisused.IfthepatientistreatedforanyHIV-relatedillness,orisdescribedashavinganyconditionresultingfromHIVpositivestatus,useB20.
