UpuntilthemergerbetweenDNVandGL,thehistoryofStiftelsenDetNorskeVeritasandDNV(nowDNVGL)isinseparable.ThemergermeantthatStiftelsenDetNorskeVeritasbecame,afterDecember2017,thesoleowneroftheoperatingcompanyDNVGL. Goingbackto1864,thecreationofDetNorskeVeritaswasaresponsetoanemerging,nationwidemarketformarineinsuranceatatimewhentheNorwegianshippingindustrywasexperiencingrapidgrowthandbreakingoutofitspreviouslocalconfinement. TheDNV-classedmerchantfleetincreasedrapidly,andagents,andlaterpermanentsurveyors,wereappointedinanumberofcountriestoserveNorwegianvesselsabroad.Steamshipswereintroducedinthe1870’s,dramaticallychangingtheclassificationbusinessandtheworkandcompetencerequiredofsurveyors. Societybecameanincreasinglydemandingstakeholderinadominantlyliberalandprivateindustry.FollowingtheTitanicdisasterin1912,safetyatseabecamethesubjectofincreasingpublicconcern,andinternationalclassificationsocietiesplayedanimportantpartindiscussionsonshipsafety. AftertheFirstWorldWar,thetransitionfromsailingshipstosteamerswascomplete,andtherewasafundamentalchangeintechnologyandskillsneededfortheclassificationindustry.Therulesweretoooldandwerenolongerinharmonywithmodernshipbuildingmethodsofthetime.Between1920and1940,DNVwastechnicallyindependent,andanewculturewasestablished,givingprioritytoengineering,constructionanddesign. GeorgVedeler,appointedmanagingdirectorofDNVin1951,introducedascientificapproachtoshipconstruction.Hisvisionwastobuildsafershipsinamoreefficientway,introducingscientificcompetenciesandskillsintotheorganization.AtthistimethefleetwasstillpredominantlyNorwegian,butinternationalizationwastakingoff. DNVenteringtheoilandgasbusiness Fromtheperspectiveofcompetenceandimpact,DNVwaswellpreparedwhencommercialoilwasfoundintheNorthSea.ThefirmcametoplayanimportantroleinthisnewindustrywithinNorwayasanadvisorforbothauthoritiesandoilcompanies.Verification,inspectionandriskmanagementservicesweredevelopedandintroducedbasedonDNV’sexperienceandtechnologicalcompetencewithinthemaritimeindustry.Later,thiscorecompetenceandindependentrolefromthemaritimeindustryhasbeenappliedtootherindustrysectors. Theworld’sfirstpipelineruleswerepublishedbyDNVin1976,settingaworldstandard.Startingintheearly1970’s,DNVwasofferedmostofthebuildingsupervisionandinspectionassignmentsontheNorwegiancontinentalshelf.OffshorefloatingrigsandsupplyvesselsalsobecameanewandstrongsegmentforDNVintraditionalshipclassification. Internationalizationanddiversification In1977,windenergywasintroducedasanewbusinesssegment.ForDNV,thisandotherclimate-friendlyserviceareasrepresentednewopportunitiesfororganizationalgrowthbasedonastrongandresearch-driventechnologybase.Newrulesweredeveloped,andcertificationofland-basedandoffshorewindturbinesbecameanimportantgrowthareaforDNV.Despiteperiodsofsetbacksanddeclineinshippingandoil,DNVwasabletofocusongrowthandinternationalizationasthetwentiethcenturycametoaclose. Inthelate1980’sandearly1990’sthenewindustryofmanagementsystemcertificationbasedonISO-standardsemerged,andDNVtookaglobalpositioninthisexpandingbusiness. Alliances,mergers,andacquisitionsbecameastrongstrategicdriverforDNV.In2005,DNVacquiredCCT(US),aspecialistincorrosioncontrolandpipelineandplantintegrityanalyses,andfollowedthiswiththeacquisitionsofGlobalEnergyConcepts(US)in2008andUS-basedBehnke,ErdmanandWhitaker(BEW)in2010.Tosupportprevailingstrategieswithinthenewclimate-friendlyservicefields,DNVestablisheditsSustainabilityCentreinBeijingin2009andaCleanTechnologyCentreinSingaporein2010. Strategicallyadaptingtothechallengesofclimatechange,andfollowingthedevelopmentoftheKyotoProtocolagreement,DNVwasaccreditedbytheUNFrameworkConventiononClimateChangeforitscleandevelopmentmechanism(CDM)in2005.By2006,DNVhadapproximately50percentoftheglobalmarketforemissionreductionsverification. Abroadersetofassuranceservicestotheenergysector In2012,DNVandKEMAjoinedforcestocreateaworld-leadingconsulting,testingandcertificationcompanyfortheglobalenergysector.Thiscompanyhasfounditshomewithintheimportantandfuture¬-orientedbusinessarea,energy,oftheDNVGLGroup.KEMAwasestablishedbytheDutchelectricalpowerindustryin1927andwassubsequentlydevelopedintoahighprofileinternationalbrandthatprovidedservicestotheglobalenergysector,includingrenewableenergy,carbonreductionandenergyefficiency,powergeneration,transmissionanddistribution. MergingDNVandGLandthenewroleofthefoundation ThenewlyformedDNVGLGroupbecameoperationalonSeptember12,2013afteralongcourtshipthatincludednumerousrelationship-buildingadvancesanddiscussionsaboutco-operationandmergersthattookplacein1867,1986,2000andagainin2006.TheDNVGLGroupcomprisesapproximately12,000employeesoperatinginover100countries.
