Shameless.ThisisoneofthemostfrustratingreadingsIhad,notbecausethewritingisbad(onthecontrary,thetouchofawellversededitorisobvious),butbecauseIsimplycannotunderstandhowastorythatclearlyhasALOTofholesinitcanbeheldinsuchahighregard.NothingaddsupinYeonmiPark'sbook,butnobodyseemstocare.Thisshouldbearedflagforallofus,sinceitshowsthatpeoplelookforpersonalheroesandinspiringsuccessstorieswhateverthecost.Everybodyismorethanreadytoacknowledgeandshowtheirsupportforyetanotherheroovercomingallobstacles,butwhataboutthehalfofthebookthatdoesn'tseemrealatall?IfParkaddssomelieshereandtheretomakeherbookmoreempoweringandappealingtothepublic,shouldn'titriseanykindofsuspicionabouttheoveralltruthfulnessofthestory?Whatifthoseliesareactuallygrossexaggerations?Parkstartsbytellingusaboutherharshchildhoodinaverymodestfamily.However,herfatherhasagreatsenseforbusiness,andstartssmugglinggoldandsuchoutofNorthKorea.Sheadmitsthathewasapartymember,butnevermentionshisrankinthere.Myguessisthathehadaverycomfortablehighposition,sinceIdoubtthatyou'dbeabletosmugglegoldoutofacommunistcountrybyonlybribinglowlevelofficialsandcops.Thisdiscreditsher"humblebeginning",andprobablySouthKoreansreachedthesameconclusionwhentheystartedcallinghertheParisHiltonofNorthKorea.Shegoesonwithherstory,andthanshementionsthatherfatherwasabletoescapeprisonbypromisinganincrediblebribetotheprisonwarden.Ofcourse,theywereverypoorandhadnosuchmoney,butthatwastheendofit.Inthemeantime,thelovethemeiscasuallyinsertedinthestory,whenarich,smart,coolandolder(Iamrunningoutofadjectives)kidfallsforthe13yearPark,despitethesocialclassgap.Soonafter,sheandhermotherescapetoChinawheretheyfallinthehandofhumantraffickers.Here,ChinesebrokersrapeKoreanwomenleftandright,buttheynevermanagetorapeParkbecauseshescreamsandkicks.I'mguessingthattheotheronesnevercameupwiththissolution...ShefinallygivesintorapewhenabigChinese"gangster"offerstohelpherentirefamilyifshesleepswithhim.ThisdealnaturallyevolvesinParkbeingthegangster'srightarminthehumantraffickingbusiness.ThisisbecauseChinesegangstersprobablydon'thaveanykindofentourage,andtheyareinneedof13yearoldstokeepthebusinessgoing.Parkmentionsthatshewasprematurelybornat7months,andthatshealwayswassmallerthantherestofthekids.However,thisdoesn'tstophertoconvinceeverybodythatsheismucholder,whilepracticallyhandlingNorthKoreanslavesacrossruralChina.Thelovethemeisthenreintroducedwiththeentranceofanewbigger"gangster"whokidnapsandalsotriestorapeher.Thepreviousgangster(practicallyherpartner)wantstogetherback,andthelovetrianglebreakswhengangwarsareclosetostartinthecityforthesakeofPark.Shereallyexpectsthereaderstobuythis...Andapparentlytheydid.Inpassingsheisalsomentioninghavinganabortion,butitprobablyisn'tthatimportantinthegrandschemeofthings.ShethenproceedstodovideochatwithhermotherinordertogainmoneytoescapetoSouthKorea.Butwhileothergirlshadtostripfortheirclients,Parkmanagedtobuildoneofthemostpopularvideochatchannelsbysimplytalkingwithhercustomers,andnevertakingherclothesoff.Butthereismore!WhilevideochattingshemeetsaniceSouthKoreanguywhofliestoChinatosimplyhelpherwithsomemoney.Then,ParkreachesSouthKoreawhereshemanagestogetfromasecondgradeleveltobeingadmittedtoaprestigiousuniversityinlittlelessthantwoyears.Hersisterdiditevenquickerthanthat,sowhat'supwiththeSouthKoreaneducationalsystem?Ofcourse,sheisbulliedinschoolbytherich,coolkids.ShethandecidestohavesomeTVappearanceshopingtofindherlonglostsister.Itdoesn'tmatterthatinsomeofthoseappearancesshewaswearingalotofmakeup(evenherclassmatesfailedtorecognizeherandfirst)andalsohadafakename.Thesearejustafewpartsofthestorythatsmellfishy.Ofcourse,YeonmiParkdidagreatjobwithherbook.Lettheroyaltiescome!Meanwhile,therestofusaregivinghercreditwhilespendingalotofmoneyonaover-hypedbook.Honestly,Iwouldhaveexpectedthatbynowsomesortofboycottshouldhavehappenedoutofrespectforactualrapevictims,humantrafficvictimsandoppressedpeopleingeneral.Iwantmy20poundsback.
