EffacementPriortopregnancyandinthefirstandsecondtrimester,aswellasmuchofthethirdtrimester,yourcervixislongandthick.Aslabornearsitbeginstoshortenandthinout.Thisactionisreferredtoaseffacement.Asyourcervixbeginstoefface,theplugkeepingtheentrancetotheuterussealedisreleased.Thisiscalledyourmucuspluganditmaycontainsomeblood. Effacementisgenerallymeasuredinpercentagesbydoctorsandmidwives.Whenyouhaveanexamyourproviderwilltellyouthatitisanywherefrom0%to100%whichmeansnoteffacedatalltocompletelyeffacedandthin.Whenitiscompletelyeffaceditbecomesapartoftheuterinewall,allowingthebabytopassthrough. DilationUntilyouarelateinyourthirdtrimester,yourcervixshouldstaytightandclosedwithnodilation.Dilationistheprocessofthemouthofthecervixopeningandwidening,whichallowsyourbabytopassthrough.Thisismeasuredincentimeters.Formostofyourpregnancyitshouldbe0centimeters.Inordertodeliveryourbabyyourcervixneedstostretchopento10centimeters.Asthecervixdilates,somepeopledescribecrampingandpressure,similartowhatyouwouldfeelduringmenstruation. Ifyoubegindilatinginthesecondtrimesteroratarapidratebeforethelastmonthofyourpregnancyitcanbeasignofprematurelabor.Ifthisisthecaseyourdoctorormidwifewilladviseyouonwhattodonext.
