Ultrasoundusesatransducerthatsendsoutultrasonicsoundwavesatcertainlocationsandangles,theultrasonicsoundwavesmovethroughtheskinandotherbodytissuestotheorgansandstructureswithin.Thesoundwavesbounceofftheorganslikeanechoandreturntothetransducer.Thetransducerpicksupthereflectedwaves,whicharethenconvertedbyacomputerintoanelectronicpictureoftheorgansortissuesunderstudy;sowecanfurtherdetectabnormallesion. Abdominalultrasoundisanimagingprocedureusedtoexaminetheinternalorgansoftheabdomenincludingtheliver,gallbladder,spleen,pancreas,andkidneys. Procedure Youwillbeputinsupineposition.Butinsomecondition,youmaybeaskedtoputindifferentpostion(leftoblique)fordifferentexaminationareasorbetterlesiondetection.Aclear,water-basedconductinggelisappliedtotheskinovertheareabeingexaminedtohelpwiththetransmissionofthesoundwave.Theultrasoundtransducer(ahandheldprobe)isthenmovedovertheabdomen.Youmayalsobeaskedtoholdyourbreathforshortperiodsoftimeduringthe examination. Theprocedureusuallytakeslessthan30minutes.
