Thirdhandsmokeconsistsofthetobaccoresiduefromcigarettes,cigars,andothertobaccoproductsthatisleftbehindaftersmokingandbuildsuponsurfacesandfurnishings.Tobaccosmokeiscomposedofnumeroustypesofgassesandparticulatematter,includingcarcinogensandheavymetals,likearsenic,lead,andcyanide.Sticky,highlytoxicparticulates,likenicotine,canclingtowallsandceilings.Gasescanbeabsorbedintodustinaroom,carpets,draperies,andotherfabricsorupholsteries. A2002studyfoundthatthesetoxicbrewscanthenre-emitbackintotheairandrecombinetoformharmfulcompoundsthatremainathighlevelslongaftersmokinghasstoppedoccurring. FURTHERRESEARCH&RESOURCES Since2002,furtherstudieshavecontributedtothe growingbodyofevidencethatthislingeringtobaccoresiduehassignificanthealthrisks.Childrenandhospitalityindustryworkersareespeciallyatriskfor considerableexposure. Studiesofspecialnoteandresourcesinclude: AstudypublishedinFebruary2010foundthatthirdhandsmokecausestheformationofcarcinogens.Thenicotineintobaccosmokereactswithnitrousacid–acommoncomponentofindoorair–toformthehazardouscarcinogens.Nicotineremainsonsurfacesfordaysandweeks,sothecarcinogenscontinuetobecreatedovertime,whicharetheninhaled,absorbedoringested. Childrenofsmokersareespeciallyatriskofthirdhandsmokeexposureandcontaminationbecausetobaccoresidueisnoticeablypresentindustthroughoutplaceswheresmokinghasoccurred.Thehomes,hair,clothes,andcarsofsmokerscanhavesignificantlevelsofthirdhandsmokecontamination.Youngchildrenareparticularlyvulnerable,becausetheycaningesttobaccoresiduebyputtingtheirhandsintheirmouthsaftertouchingcontaminatedsurfaces. ResearchersatSanDiegoStateUniversity’sDepartmentofPsychologyhavefoundthathomesofformersmokersremainedpollutedwiththirdhandsmokeforupto6monthsaftertheresidentsquitsmoking.ThethirdhandsmokesettledinhousedustandonsurfacesandthencontinuallyexposedresidentstonicotineandNNK(atobacco-specificcarcinogen)evenaftertheyhadquitsmoking.
