Whenthepersonstartstobreathenormallyagain,aorticpressurebrieflydecreasesastheexternalcompressionontheaortaisremoved,andheartratebrieflyincreasesreflexively(phaseIII).Thisisfollowedbyanincreaseinaorticpressure(andreflexdecreaseinheartrate)asthecardiacoutputsuddenlyincreasesinresponsetoarapidincreaseincardiacfilling(phaseIV).Aorticpressurealsorisesabovenormalbecauseofabaroreceptor,sympathetic-mediatedincreaseinsystemicvascularresistancethatoccurredduringtheValsava.Similarchangesoccurwheneverapersonconductsaforceexpirationagainsteitheraclosedglottisorhighpulmonaryoutflowresistance,orwhenthethoracicandabdominalmusclesarestronglycontracted.Thiscanoccurwhenapersonstrainswhilehavingabowelmovement. Similarchangescanalsooccurwhenapersonliftsaheavyweightwhileholdingtheirbreath.Revised4/28/2014 DISCLAIMER:Thesematerialsareforeducationalpurposesonly,andarenotasourceofmedicaldecision-makingadvice.
