TheuseofICD-10-CMandICD-10-PCSappliestoall"CoveredEntities,"thatishealthplans,healthcareclearinghousesandhealthcareproviders,thattransmitelectronichealthinformationinconnectionwiththeHealthInsurancePortabilityandAccountabilityAct(HIPAA)transactionstandards. AnotherfinalrulewasissuedonJanuary15,2009,callingfortheadoptionofanupdatedversiontothecurrentHIPAAelectronictransactionstandards(Version5010).ThenewerversionsreplacedtheexistingHIPAAtransactionstandardsonJanuary1,2012. OnAugust4,2014,theDepartmentofHealthandHumanServicesissuedafinalruleimplementingtheProtectingAccesstoMedicareActof2014bychangingthecompliancedateforICD-10,includingtheOfficialICD–10–CMGuidelinesforCodingandReporting,andtheOfficialICD–10–PCSGuidelinesforCodingandReporting,fromOctober1,2014toOctober1,2015.ItalsorequiresHIPAAcoveredentitiestocontinuetouseICD-9-CMthroughSeptember30,2015.
