Thebasiceffectisthatwhenyouneedtorespondtostimuli"flanked" byirrelevantstimuli,theirrelevantstimulicanstillaffectyour response.Thereisasimilaritybetweenotherparadigmsinwhichthis typeofinterferencefromanirrelevantstimulusorstimulusfeature occurs(liketheStrooptaskortheSimontask). Runthedemo Inthisexample,youwillsee5lettersappearabovethe fixationpoint,butyoumustonlyrespondtothecentralletter (whichisabovethefixationpoint).ThelettersXandCneedtobe respondedtowiththeAbuttonofyourkeyboard.ThelettersVandB needtoberespondedtowiththeLbuttonofyourkeyboard.Ifthere isamismatchbetweentheflankingletterstheirresponseandthe responserequiredbythecentralletter,wespeakofa"incongruent" or"incompatible"condition.
