Skiptomaincontent HelpCenter Ourrangeofenforcementoptions Whenwetakeenforcementactions,wemaydosoeitheronaspecificpieceofcontent(e.g.,anindividualTweetorDirectMessage)oronanaccount.Wemayemployacombinationoftheseoptions.Insomeinstances,thisisbecausethebehaviorviolatestheTwitterRules.Othertimes,itmaybeinresponsetoavalidandproperlyscopedrequestfromanauthorizedentityinagivencountry.Belowaresomeoftheenforcementactionsthatwemaytake.   Tweet-levelenforcement WetakeactionattheTweetleveltoensurethatwearenotbeingoverlyharshwithanotherwisehealthyaccountthatmadeamistakeandviolatedourrules.AfewofthewaysinwhichwemighttakeactionattheTweetlevelinclude: LabelingaTweetthatmaycontaindisputedormisleadinginformation:Ourcurrentmisleadinginformationpoliciescover:syntheticandmanipulatedmedia,COVID-19,andcivicintegrity.IfwedetermineaTweetcontainsmisleadingordisputedinformationperourpoliciesthatcouldleadtoharm,wemayaddalabeltothecontenttoprovidecontextandadditionalinformation. LimitingTweetvisibility:ThismakescontentlessvisibleonTwitter, eitherbymakingTweetsineligibleforamplificationinTopsearchresultsandontimelinesforuserswhodon’tfollowtheTweetauthor,bydownrankingTweetsinreplies(exceptwhentheuserfollowstheTweetauthor),and/orexcludingTweetsand/oraccountsinemailorin-productrecommendations.LimitingTweetvisibilitydependsonanumberofsignalsaboutthenatureoftheinteractionandthetypeofthecontent. RequiringTweetremoval:WhenwedeterminethataTweetviolatedtheTwitterRules,werequiretheviolatortoremoveitbeforetheycanTweetagain.WesendanemailnotificationtotheviolatoridentifyingtheTweet(s)inviolationandwhichpolicieshavebeenviolated.TheywillthenneedtogothroughtheprocessofremovingtheviolatingTweetorappealingourreviewiftheybelievewemadeanerror. PlacingaDirectMessagebehindanotice:InagroupDirectMessageconversation,theviolatingDirectMessagemaybeplacedbehindanoticetoensurenooneelseinthegroupcanseeitagain. Account-levelenforcement WetakeactionattheaccountlevelifwedeterminethatapersonhasviolatedtheTwitterRulesinaparticularlyegregiousway,orhasrepeatedlyviolatedthemevenafterreceivingnotificationsfromus. Requiringmediaorprofileedits:Ifanaccount’sprofileormediacontentisnotcompliantwithourpolicies,wemaymakeittemporarilyunavailableandrequirethattheviolatoreditthemediaorinformationintheirprofiletocomeintocompliance. Wealsoexplainwhichpolicytheirprofileormediacontenthasviolated. Placinganaccountinread-onlymode:Ifitseemslikeanotherwisehealthyaccountisinthemiddleofanabusiveepisode,wemighttemporarilymaketheiraccountread-only,limitingtheirabilitytoTweet,Retweet,orLikecontentuntilcalmerheadsprevail.ThepersoncanreadtheirtimelinesandwillonlybeabletosendDirectMessagestotheirfollowers. Whenanaccountisinread-onlymode,otherswillstillbeabletoseeandengagewiththeaccount.Thedurationofthisenforcementactioncanrangefrom12hoursto7days,dependingonthenatureoftheviolation. Verifyingaccountownership:Toensurethatviolatorsdonotabusetheanonymityweofferandharassothersontheplatform,wemayrequiretheaccountownertoverifyownershipwithaphonenumberoremailaddress.Thisalsohelpsusidentifyviolatorswhoareoperatingmultipleaccountsforabusivepurposesandtakeactiononsuchaccounts. Notethatwhenanaccounthasbeenlockedpendingcompletionofachallenge(suchasbeingrequiredtoprovideaphonenumber),itisremovedfromfollowercounts,Retweets,andlikesuntilitprovidesaphonenumber. Permanentsuspension:Thisisourmostsevereenforcementaction.Permanentlysuspendinganaccountwillremoveitfromglobalview,andtheviolatorwillnotbeallowedtocreatenewaccounts. Whenwepermanentlysuspendanaccount,wenotifypeoplethattheyhavebeensuspendedforabuseviolations,andexplainwhichpolicyorpoliciestheyhaveviolatedandwhichcontentwasinviolation. Violatorscanappealpermanentsuspensionsiftheybelievewemadeanerror.Theycandothisthroughtheplatforminterfaceorbyfilingareport. Uponappeal,ifwefindthatasuspensionisvalid,werespondtotheappealwithinformationonthepolicythattheaccounthasviolated. Actionswemaytakeagainstnon-violatingcontent PlacingaTweetbehindanotice:Wemayplacesomeformsofsensitivemedialikeadultcontentorgraphicviolencebehindaninterstitialadvisingviewerstobeawarethattheywillseesensitivemediaiftheyclickthrough.Thisallowsustoidentifypotentiallysensitivecontentthatsomepeoplemaynotwishtosee.Learnmoreabouthowtocontrolwhetheryouseesensitivemedia.
