HighRiskGroup(SusceptibletoDisease) Thosetakingoralcontraceptivesandhormonesupplementsaftermenopause. Thosewhosemotherorsisterhadbreastcancer. Thosewhogainweightaftermenopause. Thosewhohadbreastcancerinonebreast. Womenover40yearsofagewhohaveneverbreast-fedorgivenbirth. Thosewithearlymenstruation(menstruationbeforeage12)orlatemenopause(menopauseafterage55). Thosewhoareobese,consumetoomuchhighfatfood. Symptoms Painless,irregularbreastlumps. Progressivenippledepression. Abnormalsecretionsofthenipple,especiallythosewithblood. Breastskinissunkenorlookslikeorangepeel. Apparentasymmetryonbothsides(bylookingintoamirror). BreastSelf-Exam Within1weekaftertheendofmenstruation. Thosewithirregularmenstruationormenopauseshoulddoaself-examonceeverymonth. DiagnosticCheck Physicalexamination(palpation). Mammography:womenwithapositivefamilyhistoryorlargebreastsaftermenopause. Breastultrasound:thosewhoareyoungorhavesmallbreasts. Biopsy:fineneedlepuncture,coreneedlepunctureorsurgicalbiopsy. Treatment Yourdoctorwilldiscusswithyouthemostappropriatetreatmentdependingontheextentofthecancer'sspread,ageandoverallhealth.Currenttreatmentsincludethefollowing: Surgery(includingbreast-conservingsurgery,totalmastectomy,partialmastectomyorincombinationwithaxillarylymphnodedissectionandaxillarysentinellymphnodebiopsy). Radiotherapy. Chemotherapy. Hormonaltherapy. Biologicalmonoclonalantibodytherapy. Precautions Adrainagetubemaybeplacedaftersurgery.Notethenature,colorandvolumeofthedrainagefluid. Aftertheoperation,theaffectedsideshouldavoidliftingheavyobjectsanddoanytreatmentforashortperiodoftime,includingbloodpressuremeasurement,cuppingandacupuncture.
