Allorganizationsstrivetoprovideasafeworkingenvironment,yetthereisstillagreatdealofconfusionaboutbestpracticesandcompliancerequirementsforsafeoperationofmachinery.ISO13849offersclearguidelinesaboutpotentialhumansafetyriskandtherequiredSafetyPerformanceLevelforeachsituation.Thisinternationalstandardisacommonend-userrequirementintheEUandisreferencedinmanyotherregionalsafetystandards. ThreefactorsinfluencetherequiredPerformanceLevel: 1.Potentialseverityofinjury 2.Frequencyofexposure 3.Possibilityoflimitingthehazard SEVERITYOFINJURY SlightorSerious Thetwooptionsforclassifyingequipmentintheseverityofinjurycategoryare:slight,indicatinganormallyreversibleinjury;andserious,indicatinganormallyirreversibleinjuryordeath.Duetothepotentialforirreversibleinjuryordeathwhenoperatingtestequipment,mechanicaltestsystemsareintheseriousclassification,whichrequiresaminimumofPerformanceLevelc(PLc)forcompliance. FREQUENCYAND/ORDURATIONOFEXPOSURE SeldomorFrequent Fortestequipment,thefrequencyofexposureisdefinedasaccesstothespecimenarea.Accesstypicallyoccursinspecimenloading,unloading,adjustmentandalignment.Withrespecttoexposuretime,“seldom”isdefinedasaccessingthespecimenareanomorethanoncein15-minuteintervalsandtheaccumulatedexposuretimedoesnotexceed1/20oftheoveralloperatingtime.Inthiscircumstance,theratingwouldbe“F1”forexposure.Ifthetestoperatorisaccessingthespecimenmorethanonceevery15minutesorthisexposureexceeds1/20oftheoveralloperatingtime,itisconsideredfrequentexposure,oran“F2”ratingforexposure.Frequentexposureofan“F2”ratingrequiresaminimumPerformanceLeveld(PLd)forcompliance.SeldomexposurecouldrequireaPerformanceLevelofcord,dependingonthepossibilityofavoidingorlimitingthehazard POSSIBILITYOFAVOIDINGTHEHAZARD PossibleorScarcelyPossible Therearetwocategoriesforpossibilityofavoidingthehazardorlimitingtheharm:possibleunderspecificconditionsorscarcelypossible.Ariskassessmentcanhelpdeterminetheappropriatecategory.Ifthereisausecaseinwhichthepossibilityofavoidingthehazardisconsideredscarcelypossibleandseverity=S2,thenthiscasewouldrequireaminimumofPerformanceLeveld.Ifinthissamecase,thefrequencyofexposure=F2,thenitwouldrequireaPerformanceLevelesolution.
