Thisdocumentisatype-BstandardasstatedinISO12100. Therequirementsofthisdocumentcanbesupplementedormodifiedbyatype-Cstandard. Formachineswhicharecoveredbythescopeofatype-Cstandardandwhichhavebeendesignedandbuilt accordingtotherequirementsofthatstandard,therequirementsofthattype-Cstandardtakeprecedence. MostoftheproceduresandconditionsinthispartofISO13849arebasedontheassumptionthatthe simplifiedprocedureforestimatingtheperformancelevel(PL)describedinISO13849-1:2006,4.5.4,is used.ThispartofISO13849doesnotprovideguidanceforsituationswhenotherproceduresareused toestimatePL(e.g.Markovmodelling),inwhichcasesomeofitsprovisionswillnotapplyandadditional requirementscanbenecessary. Validationconsistsofapplyinganalysis(seeClause5)andexecutingfunctionaltests(seeClause6) underforeseeableconditionsinaccordancewiththevalidationplan.Figure1givesanoverviewofthe validationprocess.Thebalancebetweentheanalysisandtestingdependsonthetechnologyusedfor thesafety-relatedpartsandtherequiredperformancelevel.ForCategories2,3and4thevalidationof thesafetyfunctionshallalsoincludetestingunderfaultconditions. Theanalysisshouldbestartedasearlyaspossiblein,andinparallelwith,thedesignprocess.Problems canthenbecorrectedearlywhiletheyarestillrelativelyeasytocorrect,i.e.duringsteps“designand technicalrealizationofthesafetyfunction”and“evaluatetheperformancelevelPL”[thefourthandfifth boxesdownininISO13849-1:2006,Figure3].Itcanbenecessaryforsomepartsoftheanalysistobe delayeduntilthedesigniswelldeveloped.
