NewYork|TheABCsofL.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/21/style/lgbtq-gender-language.htmlGivethisarticleAdvertisementContinuereadingthemainstoryUpdatedonJune7,2019WhenIcameoutasgaymorethan10yearsago,therewereonlyfourletterscommonlyusedtogroupvarioussexualandgenderminorities:L,G,BandT.Theseletterswereanevolutiontowardinclusion—anexpansionofthelanguageusedtorepresentadisparategroupthathadoftenjustbeencalled“thegaycommunity.”Despitetheirintent,thelettersprovedtobelimiting.Timesandattitudeshavechanged,andthelanguageusedtodiscusssexualorientationandgenderidentityhasalsochanged.Asaresult,theestablishedL.G.B.T.abbreviationhasacquiredafewextraletters—andaclusterofancillaryterminologyaroundbothsexualityandgender.Noteveryonehasadoptedthemyet.Take,forexample,theadditionof“Q”thatbecameincreasinglypopularasthe20thcenturyturnedintothe21st.Someinsistedthisstoodfor“questioning,”representingpeoplewhowereuncertainoftheirsexualorientationsorgenderidentities.Othersdeclareditwasfor“queer,”acatchalltermthathassheditsderogatoryoriginsandisgainingacceptance.Nowthere’salsoI,forintersex;A,forally(orasexual,dependingonwhomyou’retalkingto);andoftenaplussignmeanttocoveranyoneelsewho’snotincluded:L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+.Howeverthat’sjustthebeginning.IntheyearsinceTheNewYorkTimesfirstpublishedthisarticleinSummer2018,thelanguageusedtodescribethegenderandsexualityspectrumshasgrown,withnewtermsbecomingmoreprominent.AsWorldPride,theannualcelebrationofL.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+identity,comestoNewYorkCityforthemonthofJune,TheTimesisaskingreaderstosharehowtheyidentify.Wehaveupdatedthislisttoreflectmorecommonthemesamongtheresponses.TellUsWhoYouAreAheadofWorldPrideinJune,wewanttocapturetheever-evolvingwaysinwhichwedescribeourselves.Whatlabelsdoyouchooseforyourself?Whatfollowsisaby-no-meansinclusivelistofvocabulary.GAYANDLESBIANIt’simportanttostartwiththebasics,and“gay”and“lesbian”areasbasicasitgets.As“homosexual”begantofeelclinicalandpejorative,gaybecamethederigueurmainstreamtermtorefertosame-sexattractioninthelate1960sandearly’70s.Gradually,aswhatwasthencalledthegayliberationmovementgainedsteam,thephrase“gayandlesbian”becamemorepopularasawaytohighlightthesimilar-yet-separateissuesfacedbywomeninthefightfortolerance.Gayisstillsometimesusedasanumbrellaterm,butthesedays,italsorefersspecificallytomen,asin“gaymenandlesbians.”OnBeingTransgenderinAmericaEliteSports:ThecaseofthetransgenderswimmerLiaThomashas stirredadebate aboutthenatureofathleticisminwomen’ssports.TransgenderYouth:Aphotographerdocumentedthelivesoftransgenderyouth.Shesharedsomethoughtsonwhatshesaw.RemoteWork:Remoteworkduringthepandemicofferedsomepeopleanopportunitytomoveforwardwithatransition.Theyarenowpreparingtoreturntotheoffice.CorporateWorld:WhatisitliketotransitionwhileworkingforWallStreet?AGoldmanSachs’employeesharesherexperience.BISEXUALSomeonewhoisattractedtopeopleoftheirgenderorothergenderidentities.Itisnotawaystationfromstraighttogay,asithadoncebeendescribed.Thestereotypesaroundbisexuality—thatit’satransitionalstageoracoverforpromiscuity—havebeenatthecenteroffraughtconversationwithinL.G.B.T.Q.circlesforyears.Themusicaltelevisionshow“CrazyEx-Girlfriend,”whichfeaturesabisexualmalecharacter,hadanentiresongrefutingthis.Asadvocatesspeakoutmoreaboutwhattheyseeas“bisexualerasure”—thepersistentquestioningornegationofbisexualidentity—thetermhasbecomeresurgent.Butsomepeoplealsoarguethattheprefix“bi”reinforcesamale/femalegenderbinarythatisn’tinclusiveenough.PANSEXUALSomeonewhoisattractedtopeopleofallgenderidentities.Orsomeonewhoisattractedtoaperson’squalitiesregardlessoftheirgenderidentity.(Theprefix“pan”means“all,”rejectingthegenderbinarythatsomeargueisimpliedby“bisexual.”)Onceamorenichetermusedbyacademics,pansexualhasenteredthemainstream,pushedinpartbycelebritiesbringingitvisibility.ThesingerMileyCyrusidentifiedaspansexualin2015.InApril,afterthesingerJanelleMonàecameoutaspansexualina“RollingStone”article,searchesforthewordonMerriam-Webster’swebsiterose11,000percent,accordingtothedictionary.ASEXUALOr“ace.”Someonewhoexperienceslittletonosexualattraction.Theyarenottobeconfusedwith“aromanticpeople,”whoexperiencelittleornoromanticattraction.Asexualpeopledonotalwaysidentifyasaromantic;aromanticpeopledonotalwaysidentifyasasexual.Moregenerally,somepeople(asexualorotherwise)identifyashavingaromanticorientationdifferentthantheirsexualorientation.Theterminologyissimilar:homoromantic,heteroromantic,biromanticandsoon.DEMISEXUALSomeonewhogenerallydoesnotexperiencesexualattractionunlesstheyhaveformedastrongemotional,butnotnecessarilyromantic,connectionwithsomeone.GRAYSEXUALSomeonewhooccasionallyexperiencessexualattractionbutusuallydoesnot;itcoversakindofgrayspacebetweenasexualityandsexualidentity.CISGENDERSomeonewhosegenderidentitymatchesthesextheywereassignedatbirth.TRANSGENDERAwide-rangingtermforpeoplewhosegenderidentityorgenderexpressiondiffersfromthebiologicalsextheywereassignedatbirth.TRANSGENDEREDNotaword.Oftenusedasone.TRANS*ORTRANS+Twoumbrellatermsfornon-cisgenderidentities.GENDERNONCONFORMING,ORG.N.C.Onewhoexpressesgenderoutsidetraditionalnormsassociatedwithmasculinityorfemininity.Notallgender-nonconformingpeoplearetransgender,andsometransgenderpeopleexpressgenderinconventionallymasculineorfeminineways.NONBINARYApersonwhoidentifiesasneithermalenorfemaleandseesthemselvesoutsidethegenderbinary.ThisissometimesshortenedtoN.B.orenby.Onenotableexample:TaylorMason,afinancialanalystontheshow“Billions,”whoisbelievedtobethefirstgendernonbinarycharacterontelevisionandisplayedbythenonbinaryactorAsiaKateDillon.GENDERQUEERAnothertermoftenusedtodescribesomeonewhosegenderidentityisoutsidethestrictmale/femalebinary.Theymayexhibitbothtraditionallymasculineandfemininequalitiesorneither.GENDERFLUIDAtermusedbypeoplewhoseidentityshiftsorfluctuates.Sometimestheseindividualsmayidentifyorexpressthemselvesasmoremasculineonsomedays,andmorefeminineonothers.GENDER-NEUTRALSomeonewhoprefersnottobedescribedbyaspecificgender,butprefers“they”asasingularpronoun(theAmericanDialectSociety’s2015WordoftheYear)orthehonorific“Mx.,”asubstitutefor“Mr.”or“Ms.”thatenteredtheOxfordEnglishDictionaryin2015.M.A.A.B./F.A.A.B./U.A.A.B.Male-assignedatbirth/female-assignedatbirth/unassignedatbirth.INTERSEXAtermforsomeonebornwithbiologicalsexcharacteristicsthataren’ttraditionallyassociatedwithmaleorfemalebodies.Intersexualitydoesnotrefertosexualorientationorgenderidentity.+Notjustamathematicalsymbolanymore,butadenotationofeverythingonthegenderandsexualityspectrumthatlettersandwordscan’tyetdescribe.AdvertisementContinuereadingthemainstory
