Aswithpassing,onemaydistinguishbetweenanoverhandandabumpset.Sincetheformerallowsformorecontroloverthespeedanddirectionoftheball,thebumpisusedonlywhentheballissolowitcannotbeproperlyhandledwithfingertips,orinbeachvolleyballwhererulesregulatingoverhandsettingaremorestringent.Inthecaseofaset,onealsospeaksofafrontorbackset,meaningwhethertheballispassedinthedirectionthesetterisfacingorbehindthesetter.Thereisalsoajumpsetthatisusedwhentheballistooclosetothenet.Inthiscase,thesetterusuallyjumpsofftheirrightfootstraightuptoavoidgoingintothenet.Thesetterusuallystandsabout⅔ofthewayfromthelefttotherightofthenetandfacestheleft(thelargerportionofnetthatthesettercansee). Liberosaredefensiveplayerswhoareresponsibleforreceivingtheattackorserve.Theyareusuallytheplayersonthecourtwiththequickestreactiontimeandbestpassingskills.Liberomeans'free'inItalian—theyreceivethisnameastheyhavetheabilitytosubstituteforanyotherplayeronthecourtduringeachplay.Theydonotnecessarilyneedtobetall,astheyneverplayatthenet,whichallowsshorterplayerswithstrongpassinganddefensiveskillstoexcelinthepositionandplayanimportantroleintheteam'ssuccess.Aplayerdesignatedasaliberoforamatchmaynotplayotherrolesduringthatmatch.Liberoswearadifferentcolourjerseythantheirteammates. MiddleblockersorMiddlehittersareplayersthatcanperformveryfastattacksthatusuallytakeplacenearthesetter.Theyarespecializedinblockingsincetheymustattempttostopequallyfastplaysfromtheiropponentsandthenquicklysetupadoubleblockatthesidesofthecourt.Innon-beginnersplay,everyteamwillhavetwomiddlehitters.Atelitelevels,middlehittersareusuallythetallestplayers,whoselimitedagilityiscounteredbytheirheightenablingmoreeffectiveblocks. Thecleardisadvantagetothisoffensiveformationisthatthereareonlytwoattackers,leavingateamwithfeweroffensiveweapons. Anotheraspectistoseethesetterasanattackingforce,albeitaweakenedforce,becausewhenthesetterisinthefrontcourttheyareableto'tip'or'dump',sowhentheballisclosetothenetonthesecondtouch,thesettermayopttohittheballoverwithonehand.Thismeansthattheblockerwhowouldotherwisenothavetoblockthesetterisengagedandmayallowoneofthehitterstohaveaneasierattack. 6–2 Inthe6–2formation,aplayeralwayscomesforwardfromthebackrowtoset.Thethreefrontrowplayersareallinattackingpositions.Thus,allsixplayersactashittersatonetimeoranother,whiletwocanactassetters.Sothe6–2formationisactuallya4–2system,buttheback-rowsetterpenetratestoset.
