GivenNISTexpertiseintheintegration,curation,andprovisioningofcriticallyevaluateddataandmodels,NISThasassumedaleadershiprolewithintheMGI.InordertofosterwidespreadadoptionoftheMGIparadigmbothacrossandwithinmaterialsdevelopmentecosystems,NISTisestablishingessentialdataexchangeprotocolsandthemeanstoensurethequalityofmaterialsdataandmodels.Theseeffortswillyieldthenewmethods,metrologies,andcapabilitiesnecessaryforacceleratedmaterialsdevelopment. NISTisworkingwithstakeholdersinindustry,academia,andgovernmenttodevelopthestandards,toolsandtechniquesenablingacquisition,representation,anddiscoveryofmaterialsdata;interoperabilityofcomputersimulationsofmaterialsphenomenaacrossmultiplelengthandtimescales;andthequalityassessmentofmaterialsdata,models,andsimulations. Internally,NISTisconductingseveralpath-finderprojectstoenableintegrationofkeyaspectsofthematerialsinnovationinfrastructure,exposechallengesintheconstructionofthisinfrastructure,andtoserveasexemplarsforthebroaderMGIeffort.Thisincludespilotprojectstodevelopsuperalloysandadvancedcomposites,bothnew,energyefficientmaterialsfortransportationapplications.TheseactivitiesarecoordinatedbytheNISTMaterialMeasurementLaboratory,inpartnershipwiththeNISTInformationTechnologyLaboratory,andwithbroadparticipationacrosstheinstitute. Insummary,NISTisestablishing(1)theessentialmaterialsdataandmodelexchangeprotocolsandthe(2)meanstoensurethequalityofmaterialsdataandmodels,ultimately(3)establishingnewmethods,metrologies,andcapabilitiesnecessaryforacceleratedmaterialsdevelopment.Additionally,thoughitseffortsto(4)integratetheseactivities,NISTisworkingtotestanddisseminateitsdevelopedinfrastructureandbestpracticestoitsstakeholders.
