Role[edit] AsPortAuthority,MPAregulatesandmanagesportandmarineservices,facilitiesandactivitieswithintheSingaporewaters.Thisincludesvesseltrafficandnavigationalsafetyandsecurity,throughregulationonoperationalefficiencyandontheenvironment. AsDeveloperandPromoter,MPAworkswithothergovernmentagenciesandmaritimeindustrypartnerstomakeSingaporealeadingglobalhubportandatopinternationalmaritimecentre.ItsaimsincludeattractingacoregroupofshipownersandoperatorstosetupoperationsinSingapore,broadeningthebreadthanddepthofmaritimeancillaryservicesofferedhere,andimprovingonthebusinessenvironmentforthemaritimeindustry. AstheNationalSeaTransportRepresentative,theMPAsafeguardsSingapore'smaritime/portinterestsintheinternationalarena.ThisextendstobeingtheGovernment'sAdvisoronmattersrelatingtoseatransport,andmaritime/portservicesandfacilities. Singaporeregistryofships[edit] TheSingaporeRegistryofShips(SRS)wasestablishedin1966.Today,SingaporeisreputedforitsqualityShipregistryandisrankedamongtheworld'stoptenlargestshipregistries,withafleetof3,843vesselsandtonnageof43.7milliongrosstons(asofendDecember2008).SRShasalsooneoftheyoungestfleetsamongthetoptenregistries,withanaverageageoftenyears. ThesteadygrowthoftheSRSatteststotheeffectiveadministrationand"qualityflag"strategythattheMPAdevelopsandpromotessinceitsestablishment.TheSRShasgrownsteadilybyabout8percent,from18millionGTin1996to43.7millionGTin2008.
