Periodontaldisease,alsoknownas“gumdisease”,isachronicdentalproblemwhichcanleadtobadbreath, recedinggums,mobileteeth,andtoothlosseventually. Thetherapyofgumdiseaserequiresthedentaltreatmentsprovidedbydentalprofessionals(usuallyperiodontists),andthegoodcooperationofthepatients.Ifthepatientdoesnotcleantheteethaccordingtodentalprofessionals’instructions,thetreatmentoutcomewillbelessthansatisfyingorthecureddiseasewillrecur. Bacteriaarethemainfactorcausingperiodontaldisease.Asbacteriaaccumulatearoundtheteethandform“dentalplaque”,thetoxinproducedbybacteriawillpenetratedeeplyintothetissuessurroundingtheteeth.Overtime,dentalplaquegetshardened(calcified)bythemineralcontentsfromthesalivaandbecome“dentalcalculus“(tartar).Dentalcalculuswillbeattachedtothetoothsurfacesandcannotbebrushedawayusingtoothbrushes,itthusresultsinguminflammation.Thetypicalsymptomsofperiodontaldiseaseincludedgumredness,badbreath,andbleedingwhenbrushingteeth.Themildsymptomsmayprogresstobecomesevereonessuchastoothmobilityandtoothloss.Periodontaldiseasecanalsobeasymptomaticandeasytobeneglected.Thatiswhymostpatientstendtopresentsevereperiodontaldiseasewhentheycomeforconsultationforthefirsttime.
